New Delhi, Oct 13: Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict today on a number of petitions contesting the Karnataka High Court decision refusing to overturn the hijab prohibition in state-run educational institutions.

A Bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia will issue the decision in the case on Thursday, according to the Supreme Court case list.

After listening to arguments in the case for ten days, the Bench had deferred its decision on the pleas as of September 22.

On March 15, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the petitions brought by a group of Muslim students at the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi, Karnataka, asking for permission to wear the hijab in class. The court determined that the hijab is not a necessary component of the Islamic faith’s religious practices.

Numerous attorneys representing the petitioners argued during the Supreme Court hearing that forbidding Muslim girls from wearing the hijab in class would jeopardise their education because they might decide not to attend.

The state government’s February 5, 2022 decision prohibiting the wearing of clothing that disturbs equality, integrity, and public order in schools and universities was one of many topics on which the petitioners’ legal counsel had fought.
