Ranchi: A high-level probe has been initiated into alleged irregularities in the procurement of security equipment by the Jharkhand Police. Acting on whistleblower complaints, DGP Anurag Gupta has constituted a four-member inquiry panel led by IG (Human Rights) Narendra Kumar Singh to investigate the matter. The committee includes DIG (Provision) Mayur Kanaiyalal Patel, DIG (Jaguar) Indrajit Mahtha, and DIG (Special Branch) Manoj Ratan Chothe.

Whistleblower-triggered inquiry to review procurement files

As per the official order issued on June 16, the committee has been directed to examine all related files, particularly those flagged under the Whistleblower Protection Act, and submit a clear report within 15 days. Notably, the initial complaint was made by an IG-rank officer, who alleged serious lapses and recommended an impartial investigation. Lagatar Media has reviewed the relevant documents, which suggest potential misconduct at high levels of the police department.

Concerns over effectiveness of internal probe

The formation of the inquiry committee has sparked concerns over potential conflict of interest, as many of the officers involved in the alleged irregularities hold ranks senior to those on the committee. Observers have questioned whether the appointed IGs and DIGs can conduct an unbiased investigation against their superiors. The whistleblower’s disclosure further hints that senior officials, possibly at the ADG and DGP levels, were directly involved in the equipment deals under scrutiny.

Accountability under spotlight

This case places a spotlight on transparency and accountability in police procurement practices. Whether the committee can maintain integrity while investigating high-ranking officers remains a critical test for internal policing mechanisms in Jharkhand. The state government’s response following the committee’s report will likely determine the future course of reforms in procurement and departmental oversight.
