Imphal: Manipur, already reeling under continuous violence and ethnic conflict, has been plunged into fresh turmoil after the mutilated bodies of six Naga people who had been abducted were recovered during a major search operation, sending shockwaves across the Naga community and the entire northeast India.

Violence Began With Murder of Three Church Leaders

The crisis began on May 13 when three church leaders from the Thadou tribe were killed, triggering a conflict between the Naga and Kuki communities. In the aftermath, 44 people including women and children were taken hostage from different locations. While some were later released, six Naga individuals remained missing — until their bodies were recovered during the search operation.

15 Security Teams Conducted Search Operation

Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF deployed around 15 teams in the forests and hilly areas of Kangpokpi district in a large-scale search operation. It was during this operation that the six bodies were recovered, weeks after the victims had gone missing on May 13.

UNC Demands Deputy CM’s Removal

The United Naga Council has condemned the killings as an attack on humanity and accused the government of failing to control the situation and being lenient towards certain rebel factions. The UNC has demanded the removal of Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen, alleging that the groups suspected of the abductions and killings have links with organisations covered under the government’s SoO agreement.

24-Hour Shutdown Called in Naga-Dominated Areas

In protest against the killings, the United Naga Council has called a 24-hour shutdown in Naga-dominated areas, with several other organisations announcing their support. Naga community leaders have stated that those who were abducted were killed in an extremely brutal manner, and that justice must be delivered.
