New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly reacted to an opinion piece written by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in The Hindu, where she raised concerns about the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the Narendra Modi-led government. Sonia Gandhi questioned the intent and implementation of the policy, accusing the Centre of ideological interference in academic institutions.
BJP Dismisses Allegations, Defends NEP
In response, BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli remarked that since the Congress and the Gandhi family have been in the Opposition, “they have failed to acknowledge a single good thing happening in the country.” He dismissed Sonia Gandhi’s criticism, saying it reflects a mindset unwilling to appreciate progress. “They haven’t seen a single positive step in 10 years because they themselves are not willing to think constructively,” Kohli added, calling the NEP a forward-looking initiative beneficial for the nation.
Fadnavis: ‘Every Patriot Welcomes This Policy’
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also responded sharply, stating that “every patriot will welcome the new education policy.” He urged Sonia Gandhi to first fully understand the policy before questioning it. Fadnavis emphasized that the NEP is designed to foster national development and that there’s no reason for anyone to feel threatened by its provisions.
BJP MP Questions Congress’s Track Record
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal joined the criticism, pointing out that Congress-led governments had ample opportunity to reform the education system but failed to do so. “Sonia Gandhi is now raising questions, but she should reflect on what her party did during its tenure,” he said, suggesting the Congress had no moral ground to criticize education reforms that seek to modernize and decolonize Indian academia.
