Seoul, Feb 28: South Korea has decided to ban the supply of strategic materials to Russia and has joined Western countries in blocking some of the country’s banks from the SWIFT international payments system as part of its sustained support for Ukraine amid Russia’s military incursion.
This measure, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry, is part of efforts to join international sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
South Korea’s foreign ministry had previously stated on February 24 that it will join certain international economic penalties against Russia in reaction to its invasion of Ukraine, but that it does not intend to take unilateral action.
Later on February 25, First Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-Kun and his U.S. counterpart, Wendy Sherman condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine and highlighted their will to form a “unified” response.
Before Russia’s invasion, South Korea had issued an emergency warning to urge the last remaining citizens to quickly leave Ukraine considering escalating military tension along the border.
