New Delhi: The Supreme Court on May 27 clarified that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process will continue across the country. The court said that under Article 324 of the Constitution, the Election Commission has the authority to clean up voter lists and conduct door-to-door verification of voters.

Petitions Against SIR Rejected

TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Yogendra Yadav and others had filed petitions challenging the SIR process. Chief Justice Surya Kant dismissed the petitions during the hearing.

Court Calls SIR Necessary for Fair Elections

The Supreme Court also observed that SIR is necessary every 20 years to ensure fair elections. According to the court, the process helps remove deceased, duplicate, and migrant voters from the electoral rolls.

Aadhaar to Be Accepted as Valid Document

The court directed the Election Commission to publish reasons for removing names from voter lists. It also ordered that Aadhaar be accepted as a valid document during the verification process. Additionally, the court instructed authorities to simplify the appeal process for affected voters.
