Washington: US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on former President Barack Obama over the Iran nuclear deal, calling it one of the worst agreements in American history, even as reports suggest a new US-Iran framework deal is nearly finalised.

Trump Blasts Obama-Era Iran Deal

A statement issued by the White House described the Iran nuclear agreement as one of the worst deals ever made by the United States, calling it the work of Barack Hussein Obama and inexperienced members of his administration. Trump alleged that the deal effectively gave Iran a direct pathway to developing nuclear weapons.

Hormuz Strait to Be Reopened Within 30 Days

In a significant development, the US and Iran have agreed to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days as part of an initial agreement, according to a report by The Washington Post citing a diplomat. An Iranian official also told the publication that nuclear negotiations have been deferred to a later date under the preliminary peace framework.

60-Day Ceasefire Extension on the Table

According to The Washington Post, both sides have agreed to extend the ceasefire by 60 days to allow time to reach a final agreement. Fox News, citing its own sources, reported that the US-Iran framework deal is now 95 percent complete, with negotiators still working through issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear stockpile.

Final Deal Not Yet Sealed

Despite the progress, Trump has made it clear that no final agreement has been signed yet, signalling that key sticking points remain before a comprehensive deal can be concluded.
