Kolkata: The Supreme Court is set to hear the highly sensitive case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata today. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will take up the matter, following the court’s suo motu cognizance of the case. The initial hearing took place on August 22, and today’s session is expected to bring further developments.
The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with members of the Indian diaspora organizing protests across 130 cities in 25 countries. These global protests demand justice for the victim, whose tragic death on August 9 has led to continuous demonstrations in Kolkata. Thousands of protestors took to the streets at midnight, participating in the third ‘Reclaim the Night’ march, forming human chains and calling for action against the culprits.
One protestor voiced frustration with the current West Bengal leadership, telling ANI, “The Bengal Chief Minister is of no use; she only cares about saving her position. If we do not get justice, we will stage a bigger protest.”
