Kolkata: The 23-year-old medical student from Odisha, who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal, has vividly described the brutal assault to doctors, recounting how the attackers chased her and dragged her into a forest near her hostel before threatening to bring “more men” if she screamed.
Attack Inside the Forest
According to her statement accessed by India Today, the survivor and a friend were returning from dinner when a group of men intercepted them. “We started running towards the forest. Then, those three people came running after us, caught me, and dragged me into the forest,” she said. They took her phone and forced her to call her friend. When he didn’t appear, they pushed her deeper into the jungle. “They told me to keep quiet, or they would call more men,” she told the doctor.
Multiple Arrests and Reconstruction Plan
The assault took place near a cremation ground close to the medical college gates. West Bengal Police have arrested five men so far, including a former college security guard, a hospital staffer, a temporary civic worker, and an unemployed youth. All the accused will be taken to the crime spot for reconstruction to corroborate the survivor’s account and establish the sequence of events.
Political Flashpoint and Nationwide Anger
The incident has sparked outrage across the country. The survivor’s father compared the situation in Bengal to “Aurangzeb’s rule” and vowed to take his daughter back to Odisha for her safety. His remarks followed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial statement suggesting female students should not step out late at night, which drew widespread condemnation. Governor CV Ananda Bose called for a “second renaissance” to ensure women’s safety.
