New Delhi, Nov 6: India won their final match in Melbourne by 71 runs on Sunday, capping up a solid performance in the Super-12 round of the T20 World Cup.
KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav both had outstanding performances in India’s match against Zimbabwe, which helped the team advance to the tournament’s semifinals.
Zimbabwe was dismissed for just 115 runs in 17.2 overs while chasing 187 runs against a potent bowling attack, failing to withstand the calibre of Ravichandran Ashwin, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The best bowler was Ravi Ashwin, who had three wickets for just 22 runs on the day.
India may have triumphed by a wide margin, but they would not have done so if the first innings had gone the way it did. India was facing a middle total of 160s as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to score big or quickly against the Zimbabwe bowling.
In the 12th over, Suryakumar was called into the crease and resolved the situation on his own. In the final overs of the game, Surya stood up and unleashed an incredible attack while wickets fell from the opposing side of the ground.
Surya’s 25-ball 61* allowed him to surpass 1000 T20I runs for the year while also significantly contributing to India’s high total of 186 runs.
The Indian vice-captain scored back-to-back half-centuries, giving him some confidence after his team’s first three games ended in defeat. A 35-ball 51 at a time when India were having trouble is an admirable effort and will silence the critics. Rahul claimed in a post-game interview that he did not have even the slightest doubt about his abilities during the three games and was confident he would succeed.
