Noamundi, Nov 27: The Tata Steel Ltd organised its Noamundi (West Singhbhum) Run-a-thon in various categories on Sunday including people with disabilities (PwD).
Apart from the 10 km, 7 km and 5 km run, a special 2 km run was also organised for specially abled people promoting inclusivity in such mainstream events. The run in various categories were flagged off by Tata Steel vice president (Raw Materials) D.B. Sundara Ramam, his wife DB Shailaja Ramam along with general manager OMQ Atul Bhatnagar and his wife Surbhi Bhatnagar. The Run-a-Thon was organised at the Noamundi stadium on the theme of ‘Building a Greener Tomorrow’. More than 5400 participated in this event that kicked off at 6 am.
Around 20 people with disabilities participating at the run. PwDs on wheelchairs also participated in the event.
“The most important thing is to participate. Winning or losing is just a by-product of participation. Usually people with disabilities do not get an exposure and thus this is a culture Tata Steel promotes for social inclusion,” said Manju Sharma, a participant of the 2 km category at the Run-a-Thon who also works at the Tata Steel Sabal Centre at Noamundi that works on capacity building of PwDs.
The event also saw participants from nearby villages, Tata Steel employees, their families and students from local schools and educational institutes. The Noamundi Run-a-Thon has been organised since 2019.
Tata Steel has been promoting sports since its inception. Apart from the Noamundi Run-a-Thon, Tata Steel has been organising Jamshedpur Run-a-Thon, Kolkata Run and Bhubaneswar half marathon to promote fitness. The next Tata Steel fitness run will take place in Kolkata on Dec 18.
