Jamshedpur, Nov 22: Police on Monday arrested an assistant sub-inspector, Dharmendra Kumar Singh in connection with the murder of Varsha Patel whose body was found from a sack in the Telco thana area on November 18 morning.
A prime suspect in the sensational murder case, the ASI was today brought from his native place in Bhojpur district where he had gone away after committing the murder on the night of November 12. During interrogation, he confessed the crime.
The police had recovered the body of a young woman from a sack that was found lying near a pond under the Telco thana area on November 18 morning. Later in the afternoon, the body was identified as that of Varsha Patel, a resident of South Park in Bistupur.
Speaking about the breakthrough, the superintendent of police (City) Subhash Chandra Jat said that the ASI, Dharmendra murdered Varsha with whom he had an illicit relation.
“The ASI who was posted in Sakchi thana murdered the 32-year-old woman as he had become frustrated with the blackmailing by the murder victim. She was also not allowing him to go to his native place and used to exploit him financially, ” said Jat at a press conference.
The City SP said the ASI (39) had murdered the woman at her rented house by strangulating her. He said before the strangulation, he had hit her head in the wall following an altercation between the two.
“After killing the woman, the ASI who was married and father of two children had dropped her some ornaments in the Subernarekha river and the smartphone in a place at Bistupur. Later he had stuffed the body in a plastic sack and carried it on his bike to a pond in Telco where he dropped it, ” said the City SP.
Jat said Dharmendra had gone over to Bhojpur for attending a marriage ceremony having taken leave from November 13.
He said they have recovered the smartphone and the bike beside the plastic sack.
The senior police officer said that the ASI was arrested for committing the murder and trying to hush up the crime, adding that he was sent to Ghaghidih Central Jail after production before a judicial magistrate in the afternoon.
