Dhanbad Sept. 1: Thermocol made plates and bowls would be banned in all 194 panchayats of Deoghar district soon.
Deoghar deputy commissioner (DC) Manjunath Bhajantri on Wednesday requested villagers of all the 194 panchayats to use leaf plate and leaf bowls in place of thermocol made plates and bowls in marriage and other family functions for the protection of the environment and avoiding fatal diseases.
At present, the use of thermocol made material is banned in Baba Baidyanath dham temple area and in some places under the municipal corporation in Deoghar. Now, the district administration has decided to impose a ban in panchayats too.
“Thermocol and plastic made plates and other material are not only injurious for human body but also inflict harm to the environment because it does not get destroyed even in the fire. Rather it generates serious diseases and injurious gas,” said the deputy commissioner.
Manjunath Bhajantri said the ban on thermocol in some places in the district has increased the demand for leaf plates and bowls in the markets. Environment experts say eating in Leaf plate and bowl is not only congenial for health but also does not harm the environment.
Bhajantri also directed district, block and panchayat level officers to promote use of leaf made material in their respective areas in the interest of public health, environmental protection and making women self-dependent.
