Kolkata, May 19: Abhishek Banerjee, the leader of the TMC, has chosen to temporarily halt his mass outreach effort in order to appear in the investigation after being summoned by the CBI to appear at its Kolkata office on Saturday.
TMC officials report that the party’s national general secretary opted to return to the capital on Friday, putting a brief halt to his continuing mass outreach drive.
“I am returning to Kolkata tonight, as there has been a development,” Abhishek Banerjee said.
According to officials, Banerjee received a letter asking him join in the investigation at its headquarters in Kolkata’s Nizam Palace.
Earlier on Thursday, the Calcutta High Court rejected a petition from Banerjee asking for the recall of an earlier ruling that allowed the CBI and ED to question him on the teacher recruitment scam.
A complaint made by scam suspect Kuntal Ghosh mentioned the TMC leader by name. According to Ghosh, Abhishek Banerjee was named in the school scam case under pressure from central investigating agencies.
“Abhishek Banerjee will appear at CBI’s office at Nizam Palace at 11 am. He will be doing one event in Bankura and then leave for Kolkata,” a TMC leader said.
This evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will speak at the second rally in Bankura, which was originally going to be addressed by Abhishek, who is also the TMC supremo’s nephew.
Following the announcement of the Calcutta High Court judgement on Thursday, Abhishek had told reporters that, “I have full respect for the judiciary and the court. I have no problem in cooperating with investigating agencies. Earlier too, whenever central agencies summoned me, I had appeared and extended my full cooperation.”
