Sanitation Worker Forced to Assist Delivery Due to Lack of Medical Personnel and Ambulances

Bhopal: A tragic incident unfolded in Kharai village, Shivpuri district, where a pregnant woman was compelled to rely on a sanitation worker for childbirth after emergency medical services failed to respond.

On Sunday morning, 32-year-old Rani went into labor but faced a series of failures in obtaining timely medical assistance. Despite multiple calls for an ambulance and a doctor, neither arrived. Rani’s family managed to get her to the local hospital, only to find that there were no medical professionals available—neither doctors nor nurses were present.

In a dire situation, a sanitation worker at the hospital was forced to assist with the delivery. The worker, who later admitted to the task in a widely circulated video, revealed that the child did not survive. She also noted the absence of doctors and nurses at the facility. Reports indicate that the assigned doctor was on leave, and the nurse was reportedly missing.

Following the incident, the sanitation worker has been dismissed from her position. However, questions remain about the broader failures in the healthcare system, including the lack of ambulances, which are mandated by state law to transport pregnant women to medical facilities.

District Health Officer Sanjay Risheshwar has announced an investigation into the incident and promised “strict action” against those responsible for the oversight. The case highlights serious deficiencies in emergency medical services and hospital staffing that contributed to the tragic outcome.
