Wayanad: At least 19 people have lost their lives and hundreds are feared trapped following three devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district amid heavy rainfall. The calamities occurred within four hours near the hilly areas of Meppadi.

Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, have mobilized extensive rescue operations. The Kannur Defence Security Corps and two Air Force helicopters are also en route to assist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured all possible assistance to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He has also directed BJP workers to aid in rescue efforts. “Distressed by the landslides in Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue operations are currently underway,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Prime Minister’s Office has announced compensation of ?2 lakh for the families of those killed and ?50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister Vijayan confirmed that all available resources and agencies are coordinating the rescue mission. State ministers have been tasked with overseeing operations, ensuring efficient coordination.

Former Wayanad MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his deep anguish over the disaster and offered condolences. “I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon,” he stated on X, urging UDF workers to support the administration’s efforts.

The affected regions include Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. These areas have suffered significant infrastructural damage, with bridges and roads washed away, rendering them inaccessible.

UDF MLA T Siddique reported plans to airlift stranded individuals from Mundakkai. “Currently, we have no complete information about those missing and dead in the landslides. Many areas have been cut off,” he told PTI, highlighting the challenges faced by NDRF personnel.

The state Health Department has established a control room to manage the crisis. Those in need of emergency assistance can contact authorities via the helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833.
