Chandigarh, Oct.28: Three woman farmers were killed and two others were injured after a truck allegedly slammed into them in Haryana’s Jhajjar area on Thursday morning.
The women had been participating in farmer protests and were waiting for an autorickshaw to take them back to their native village in Mansa, Punjab, when the event occurred.
The deceased have been identified as Amarjeet Kaur, Gurmail Kaur, and Harsinder Kaur.
The incident happened at 6 a.m., when a group of at least seven women farmers were sitting on a median waiting for an autorickshaw to take them to the railway station, according to the police.
“A tipper, carrying dust, rammed into the group of women farmers. Two of them perished instantly. The injured were taken to a civil hospital and then transferred to PGI Rohtak for treatment. One of the injured died en route to the Rohtak hospital, while two women are said to remain unharmed,” said Waseem Akram, superintendent of police in Jhajjar.
Two other women who were injured have been identified as Gurmel Kaur and Harmeet Kaur. According to authorities, they all came from the village of Dialuwala in the block of Bhikhi in the Mansa district. The truck driver fled the scene after abandoning his vehicle. According to authorities, he has yet to be apprehended.
“The women were returning to their village Punjab as part of rotation,” Satwant Singh, a member of Bharatiya Kisan Union, Ugrahan, said. “They had participated in farmer protests. The alleged tipper driver is thought to have fallen asleep behind the wheel.”
Farmers have been sitting on the borders of Delhi for the past 11 months as part of their agitation against the three contentious farm laws.
