Lucknow, Dec 8: In the Uttar Pradesh district of Mainpuri, Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav defeated Raghuraj Singh Shakya, a candidate for the BJP, by a margin of more than 2.88 lakh votes.

Today’s byelection results for five assembly constituencies across five states will also be announced.

After the passing of her father-in-law, Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh, in October, Mainpuri became vacant.Dimple Yadav thanked Mainpuri voters for their support after she won.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me. I said this would be a historic mandate in the name of Neta ji and that is what has happened,” she said.

I want to thank all the supporters of the Samajwadi Party who worked rigorously for our victory. I also want to thank the people of Mainpuri for believing in me. Although the results of the byelections won’t have much of an impact on the BJP’s ability to govern both the centre and Uttar Pradesh, a victory would offer the victor a psychological advantage in the run-up to the general election in 2024.

Six assembly seats in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, were up for election on December 5.
