Hazaribag, Dec 21: Be ready to witness the winter solstice on December 22 when the northern hemisphere of the earth experiences the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
Author and Megalith explorer Subhashis Das said the sun on this day shines on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere hence it is the shortest day in the northern hemisphere and the longest in the southern hemisphere.
The sun from the following day would begin its return journey towards the summer solstice of 20/21 June in the northern hemisphere when the sun would shine on the Tropic of Cancer. Due to this, days would be longer from the next day of the winter solstice.
Subhashis Das is known for his discovery of several megalithic sites in Jharkhand in Chano, Purni Mandar, Katia Murwey and Pakri Barwadih where he found that the ancient megalithic makers aligned the stones in these sites towards the sunrise similar to several megaliths of Europe and East Asia.
Talking to this correspondent, Subhashis said these megalithic sites were like a laboratory for the ancient people who used to make calculations. He said advanced research is needed to explore many hidden facts about such sites.
“First we have to save them due to the negligent attitude of the government as many of them are collapsing these days,” added Das who was invited by the universities in Japan and Spain to share his knowledge about megaliths of Jharkhand and India.
