Hazaribag, July 18: 22-year-old Mohammad Ashfaq, who was arrested on charges of theft in Barhi on Monday evening, died under mysterious circumstances in police custody.

According to the information, Mohammad Ashfaq was arrested by the police on the charges of theft in the Krishnapuri locality. He remained in police custody throughout the night. But on Tuesday morning at around 11 am, he was found dead making his relatives claim it as a custodial death out of torture.

His relatives said that the police took Ashfaq to the hospital but by that time he was dead. Angry residents blocked the GT Road with the body demanding senior officials to come to the spot.

Sources said Ashfaq Khan was caught red-handed committing theft in a house in Krishnapuri locality under Konra Panchayat on Monday night. Owner of the house, Basudev Prasad said Ashfaq had entered his house by breaking the lock but was caught. He immediately informed the police about it. The police reached the spot, arrested and took him to the police station, where the interrogation was done. Sources said Ashfaq accepted his involvement in many incidents. But later how he died is yet not cleared by the Barhi police. At the time of filing the story, the blockade on the GT road continued.
