Thanjavur, April 27: As many as 11 people, including children, died from electrocution during a temple chariot procession in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district on Wednesday when it collided with a high-tension transmission line.
At least 15 other people were hurt as a result of the incident. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, has given a financial aid package of Rs. 5 lakh for each of the deceased, according to the CM’s office.
PM Modi also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakhs each from the PM national relief fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives. Injured will be given a concession of Rs 50,000.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning in neighbouring Kalimedu village, during the Appar temple chariot procession.
According to reports, the temple car was approaching a bend and was attempting to turn when it hit an obstacle and reversed. According to authorities and eyewitnesses, the chariot collided with an overhead line while reversing and burst into flames. People standing on the chariot were electrocuted as a result of the impact. The chariot was entirely wrecked in the hit, according to TV footage.
According to authorities, those who were injured were sent to Thanjavur Medical College. The parade was part of Tamil Nadu’s yearly chariot festival.
