Srinagar, July 8: In Jammu and Kashmir, the hiring of 1,200 police personnel has been cancelled due to widespread exam corruption. The special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked in 2019, and this was the state’s first large recruiting drive since.

Days after a team of investigators led by RK Goyal, Additional Chief Secretary for Home J&K, delivered its report, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation investigation and threatened to take action against those found guilty. The J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) produced a merit list of police sub-inspectors last month. The panel has discovered widespread corruption and manipulation of the list.

“JKP Sub-Inspector recruitment has been cancelled & a CBI probe has been recommended into the selection process. Culprits will be brought to justice soon. It’s a first big step towards securing the future of our youth and the government will soon decide the future course of action for fresh recruitment,” Governor Sinha said in a tweet.

A total of 97,000 candidates showed up for the JKSSB tests. Serious inconsistencies emerged days after the merit list of sub-inspectors was made available last month. Relatives from 20 different families were among the list’s top performers, casting doubt on the selection process’ fairness. Additionally, there were questions about the selection of a large number of applicants from a certain region and centre in Jammu.

In Jammu, thousands of disgruntled candidates flocked to the streets, forcing the administration to launch an investigation. The demonstrators claimed that the merit list had been heavily corrupted.
