New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days, was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday and admitted to the emergency ward, with hospital authorities stating that he is conscious and his condition is currently stable.
Police Move Wangchuk to Hospital Following Court Directive
Delhi Police took Wangchuk to the hospital for treatment following directions from the High Court and on the advice of doctors, given his deteriorating health condition. During the process, some protesters attempted to resist, prompting police to disperse them, leading to brief chaos at the scene. Police have also appealed to the remaining protesters to vacate the Jantar Mantar site.
CJP Protest Ongoing Since June 20 Over NEET Exam Issues
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, reforms to the examination system, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Sonam Wangchuk had joined the protest and began his hunger strike in support of these demands.
CJP Leader Alleges Mistreatment During Wangchuk’s Removal
CJP founding president Abhijeet Dipke alleged that police assaulted him and took him into custody, claiming that police acted forcefully against the protesters and took Wangchuk to the hospital against his wishes.
Wangchuk Had Urged Public to Join July 20 Parliament March
A day earlier, on Friday, Wangchuk had released a video message stating that his hunger strike had led to a roughly 20 percent loss in his body weight, though he said his resolve remained strong. He had appealed to people to join the proposed march to Parliament on July 20 in large numbers, stating that the true strength of any public movement lies in the participation of the people.
