Srinagar, Dec 23: In a major breakthrough, police on Friday arrested 17 people, including five policemen in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir unearthing a narcotics smuggling module originating from Pakistan.
According to the police, the drugs were transported from Pakistan through the Keran sector in the Kupwara district.
“We have busted a major narcotics module. 17 people have been arrested – five policemen, shopkeepers, a political activist, and a contractor,” said Yougal Kumar Manhas, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara.
As per information, the police zeroed in on some drug peddlers in Kupwara town and its adjoining areas. During the investigation, they found a large network involved in narcotic smuggling.
Police have recovered two kgs of heroin from the accused. “The module had received five kgs of heroin,” the SSP said.
After a preliminary investigation, Waseem admitted to being a part of a large group of drug traffickers and revealed the names of some of his associates who belonged to this district as well as the Uri area of district Baramulla involved in the illegal trade. Subsequent raids were conducted at various places across the district and 16 more persons were arrested by different teams of Police.
The busting of this drug smuggling and peddling module has yet again exposed the direct involvement of Pakistan-based terrorist traffickers in pumping drugs into the Kashmir Valley to destroy Kashmiri youth.
