One killed, 17 injured in massive fire after explosion in Nashik factory

Nashik, Jan 1: A massive fire broke out at the Jindal company`s plant in Gonde village of Igatpuri in Nashik district on Sunday.

According to reports, there was an explosion in the boiler. At least 17 people have been taken to a hospital and five of them are in critical condition. One of them has died and two more are feared trapped, said the officials.

The blast resulted in a major explosion at the factory. The fire tenders immediately rushed to the scene to douse the fire, and senior officials have an overview of the situation. A helicopter of the Indian Air Force has also been deployed for rescue operations.

A loud explosion was heard and a huge plume of smoke was seen rising from the site by the residents. A video showing a huge smoke rising from the factory has gone viral on social media.

The blaze erupted around 11:30 am at the Jindal Group’s polythene manufacturing unit in Mundegaon village of Igatpuri tehsil in Nashik. A fire broke out at the boiler inside the chemical plant.

The deceased woman was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stepped into action and said that all possible help was being provided to the injured and those stuck inside.

“I am personally monitoring the situation. Fire systems from all nearby stations are pressed into action. Two  people have died, 17 injured in the incident. The expense of treating the injured will be borne by the govt. Ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs each will be given to families of the deceased. Inquiry to be conducted,” said CM Shinde.

The fire department is currently trying to extinguish the fire.
