Dhanbad, Mar 31: The court of District and Sessions judge Rajkumar Mishra on Friday rejected the bail petition of Ranchi-based news channel News 11 Bharat head Arup Chatterjee in a forgery case.

Chatterjee is presently lodged in the Dhanbad jail for the last nine months facing a dozen cases of cheating and extortion charges.

The new cheating case was lodged on January 19, 2023, by Maharaj Singh, a resident of the Amtal area in Tisra police station. He was sent to 14 days of judicial custody on January 20, 2023, by the court of First Class Judicial Magistrate Santoshni Murmu.

In his complaint, Maharaj Singh had alleged that he had invested Rs 5.25 lakh in Arup Chatterjee-led chit fund company Care Vision Infrastructure and Agrogate  on February 29, 2012. He had promised to pay Rs 7,000 per month as per policy but never paid.

Arup had applied for bail in this case and today the court rejected it.

Arup Chatterjee, News 11 Bharat head, is a Dhanbad resident and has shifted to Ranchi. He was arrested on July 17 last year from an apartment in Ranchi by the Dhanbad police on charges of extortion, blackmailing and criminal conspiracy.

First, a coal trader of Dhanbad lodged an FIR against him at the Govindpur police station of the district on June 27, 2022, for black mailing. Later, a dozen victims of Arup Chatterjee lodged complaints against him in different police stations in Dhanbad and  West Bengal.
