New Delhi, May 22: The TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s appeal against the Calcutta High Court judgement allowing Central agencies to question him regarding a recruitment scam was accepted by the Supreme Court on Monday. The appeal will be heard on Friday.
A Friday hearing for Abhishek Banerjee’s appeal was scheduled by the justices Aniruddha Bose and Sanjay Karol’s bench.
Senior attorney Abhishek Manu Singhvi requested an urgent hearing and mentioned the plea before the Supreme Court.
The lawyer said that probe agencies have called Banerjee for questioning to Darjeeling for nine hours.
Any date this week may be granted, he said. The petitioner is also appealing against the costs imposed against him, the attorney added.
Last Thursday, the Calcutta High Court granted the central agencies permission to question the TMC leader regarding the recruitment scandal in West Bengal schools. The CBI then issued a summon for Banerjee.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee who is also West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday in relation to the West Bengal school recruitment scandal. Banerjee has questioned the decision of the investigation agency to call him at such short notice.
Abhishek Banerjee said that the CBI’s Saturday interrogation of him, which lasted for over nine hours, was a waste of both of their time.
“I was questioned for 9 hrs 40 minutes by CBI. This was a total waste of their time (CBI time) and my time. Arrest me if you have proof against me. We will not bow down to you,” TMC MP said.
“In the name of investigation, they are harassing me. They want to hamper my Jan Sanjog Yatra. This is done by BJP,” he said.
Abhishek, his wife, and his sister-in-law were earlier questioned by central agencies on a coal smuggling scam case.
