Ranchi, July 20: The Jharkhand High Court hearing a PIL involving theft of a baby from Nirmal Hirday, a charitable trust being run by Missionaries of Charity (MoC), verbally observed that people should be aware of such organizations involved in theft of babies.

Anuranjan Ashok had filed a PIL through his advocate Rajeev Kumar demanding a CBI probe into the incident of child theft from the organisation. Ashok through his PIL had informed the court about foreign funding to this organization and had also demanded an ED probe.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra while hearing the petition directed the petitioner to make Nirmal Hriday and MoC parties in the case and deferred the hearing for two weeks.

An FIR was registered against Nirmal Hriday in 2018 after chairperson Ranchi Child Welfare Committee Rupa Verma sounded the alarm. Verma sounded alarm after a childless couple from Uttar Pradesh claimed that they had paid Rs 1.2 lakh to Nirmal Hriday for a male baby born on May 1. The baby, according to them, was handed over on May 14, 2018 but taken away in July, 2018.
