New Delhi: The BJP leadership has reprimanded actor-politician Kangana Ranaut for her recent controversial remarks on the farmers’ protest, which have stirred considerable controversy. The party clarified that Ranaut’s comments do not represent its official stance, emphasizing that she is not authorized to speak on policy matters on behalf of the BJP.
This rebuke follows a day after the 38-year-old Member of Parliament suggested that the farmers’ protest could have escalated into a crisis similar to that of Bangladesh if the government had not taken decisive action.
“Kangana Ranaut is not authorized to comment on policy matters for the party and has not received permission to do so. The BJP has instructed Ms. Ranaut to refrain from making such statements in the future,” the party said in a statement.
BJP leaders from Haryana and Punjab have also cautioned the MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district against making inflammatory statements. Punjab BJP leader Harjit Grewal remarked, “It is not Kangana’s domain to speak on farmers’ issues. Her statement is personal. Prime Minister Modi and the BJP are pro-farmer. The opposition parties are working against us, and Kangana’s comments are only aiding their cause. She should avoid making such statements, especially on sensitive or religious matters.”
The remarks by Ranaut have also drawn a sharp response from the Congress. Party leader Randeep Surjewala, who is actively campaigning in poll-bound Haryana, a state that witnessed a year-long farmers’ protest, quipped that Ranaut should “get well soon.” He questioned, “Were these Kangana’s words alone, or were they influenced by someone else? If not, then why is the BJP maintaining silence on this issue?”
Kangana Ranaut, known for her provocative statements, has been a vocal critic of the farmers’ protest against the now-repealed three farm laws. In 2020, she was embroiled in controversy when she allegedly misidentified a woman farmer from Punjab participating in the protests, labeling her as Bilkis Bano, an elderly woman who became a prominent face of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh. Ranaut had further inflamed tensions by suggesting the woman was “available for ₹100,” implying she could be hired for protests.
The controversy resurfaced earlier this year when Ranaut was reportedly slapped by a woman Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable at Chandigarh airport while en route to Delhi.
