Kolkata: Junior doctors in West Bengal have resumed their “total cease-work” protest, demanding improved security at state-run hospitals following the rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The cease-work began at 10 am today as doctors expressed frustration over the government’s lack of “positive action” to address their safety concerns.
Protest Reignites Amid Safety Concerns
The doctors had previously ended their 42-day strike on September 21 due to the flood situation in the state. However, a recent attack on medics at Sagore Dutta Medical College has reignited their protests. The doctors claim they were beaten by the relatives of a patient who died during treatment, exacerbating fears about their safety.
Dr. Aniket Mahato, one of the protesting doctors, stated, “Today is the 52nd day (of the protest), and we are still being attacked. There has been no effort to fulfill the promises made during meetings with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. We have no choice but to resume the full cease-work.”
Government Response and Delays
The West Bengal government has assured the protesting doctors that steps are being taken to improve hospital security. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant explained that work has already begun on projects like installing CCTVs and constructing restrooms and bathrooms in hospitals. However, he emphasized that more time is needed to complete the tasks.
“We are working on it, but some time is required to install CCTVs and build facilities. It’s a collaborative effort, and I am sure the results will be visible soon. Patience is necessary,” Pant said.
Supreme Court’s Stance
During a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, the court criticized the Bengal government for the slow progress in implementing security measures for doctors. The government cited the flood situation as a reason for the delay and informed the court that 26% of the required work has been completed. The government requested an extension until October 15 to finish the remaining work.
Upcoming Protest Rally
The protesting doctors have announced a major rally in Kolkata on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Mahalaya, the start of the Durga Puja celebrations. The rally is expected to draw widespread attention to their demands for improved security.
Background of the Protest
The protests began after the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, which shocked the nation and led to widespread strikes by doctors across West Bengal. The strike was temporarily called off after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured the medical community that their demands would be addressed.
