Kolkata: The parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expressed their heartbreak and disappointment on Friday after two key suspects in the case were granted bail. They criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period, leading to the release of the accused.

“We Trusted the System, but It’s Failing Us”

A Sealdah court granted bail to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and ex-officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal, both accused in the heinous crime. The victim’s mother, devastated by the development, said, “We thought the CBI would speed up the investigation and bring justice. But with the accused granted bail, it feels like the system is failing us.”

The victim’s father echoed her sentiments, saying, “We trusted the CBI to deliver justice, but now we wonder if we will ever see justice for our daughter.”

Accusations Against the Suspects

Sandip Ghosh, facing charges of tampering with evidence, was arrested by the CBI alongside Mondal, who allegedly delayed filing the First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Despite receiving bail in this case, Ghosh will remain in custody due to his involvement in a separate financial irregularities case at RG Kar Hospital.

Speaking to reporters, Mondal’s lawyer confirmed that his client would soon be released from judicial custody.

Public Outrage and the Victim’s Legacy

The horrific crime, which occurred on August 9, sparked unprecedented protests across West Bengal, with demands for justice reaching a fever pitch. The high court later handed the case to the CBI following allegations of police mishandling.

However, the latest developments have left the victim’s family and many supporters disheartened. “Every day, we wonder if this will be another case where the powerful escape punishment,” the victim’s mother said, reflecting the growing frustration with the judicial process.

The case remains a somber reminder of the urgent need for reforms to ensure justice for victims of heinous crimes.
