New Delhi: Rekha Gupta has been named as Delhi’s new Chief Minister, surprising many as a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh. The BJP’s decision to pick her over other experienced contenders, such as Parvesh Verma, has sparked curiosity.

Sources indicate that two key reasons influenced the BJP’s choice:

1. A Woman Chief Minister: The party wanted to emphasize its commitment to women empowerment, a major campaign theme.

2. A Vaishya Leader: The BJP’s previous Delhi Chief Ministers were from Punjabi (ML Khurana), Jat (Saheb Singh Verma), and Brahmin (Sushma Swaraj) communities. Rekha Gupta, a Vaishya, fills this gap and strengthens the party’s social equation.

Grassroots Leadership Rewarded

Rekha Gupta’s selection also aligns with the BJP’s strategy of rewarding grassroots leaders. Born in Jind, Haryana, she has held leadership positions in BJP’s youth wing, served as President of Delhi University Students’ Union, and played a significant role in the party’s organizational work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged her journey, stating on X, “She has risen from the grassroots… active in campus politics, state organization, and municipal administration. She will work for Delhi’s development with full vigour.”

With her swearing-in, Rekha Gupta becomes Delhi’s first woman Chief Minister from the BJP since Sushma Swaraj in 1998.
