Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan Sworn in as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court

Ranchi: Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan has officially taken over as the new Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. In a swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Chauhan.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, sitting judges of the High Court, Advocate General Rajiv Ranjan, senior advocates, representatives of the State Bar Council, Advocates’ Association, Additional Advocates General, and many members of the legal fraternity.

Prior to this appointment, Justice Chauhan served as a senior judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Early Life and Education

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan was born on January 9, 1964, in Rohru Tehsil, located in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, followed by a B.A. (Honours) from Government Degree College, Sanjauli. He later obtained his LLB degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Legal and Judicial Career

Legal Practice: Justice Chauhan began his legal career in 1989 when he enrolled with the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2007.

High Court Judge: On February 23, 2014, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and was made Permanent Judge on November 30, 2014.

Acting Chief Justice: During his tenure in Himachal Pradesh, he served multiple times as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.

Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court: In May 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name for the post of Chief Justice of Jharkhand. The Central Government notified his appointment on July 14, 2025.

Throughout his judicial career, Justice Chauhan has adjudicated over 70,000 cases, reflecting his extensive experience and dedication to the judiciary.
