New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to attend the upcoming Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. While the Prime Minister will not attend in person, Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh will represent India at the high-level meeting.
Global Leaders To Join Historic Peace Talks
The summit will be co-chaired by former US President Donald Trump and President El-Sisi. It will bring together leaders from more than 20 nations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The event aims to stabilize the Middle East following Israel’s ceasefire and partial troop withdrawal, which allowed Palestinian families to return to devastated areas.
Hamas Boycott And Security Challenges Ahead
Despite international momentum, the peace deal faces resistance. Hamas has announced it will boycott the signing, rejecting Trump’s disarmament proposals and denouncing relocation plans for Gazans as “absurd.” A multinational task force led by the US and involving Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the UAE is expected to oversee security. The summit follows the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which sparked weeks of conflict. Israel has agreed to release 250 prisoners and 1,700 Gazans in exchange for 47 Israeli hostages, but political divisions continue to cloud the path to lasting peace.
