Kolkata: Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal, the Centre has approved Y+ category security for Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal, citing heightened threat perception during the sensitive electoral process.

Centre Clears Y+ Security Cover

According to sources, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs granted Y+ security to the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer based on inputs from intelligence agencies. Under this arrangement, around 20 armed CISF personnel will provide round-the-clock protection to Manoj Agarwal, reflecting the critical nature of his role during the voter list revision exercise.

Why Security Was Stepped Up

The SIR process in West Bengal has unfolded amid a tense atmosphere. Earlier, security of the Chief Electoral Officer’s office was handled by state police. However, concerns escalated in November when a group of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) staged protests outside the CEO office, citing excessive workload. The incident raised serious questions about the adequacy of existing security arrangements.

Election Commission Intervention

Following the protests, the Election Commission directed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to ensure the safety of officers and staff at the CEO office. Subsequently, the Commission moved the office under central security cover. The decision gained urgency as hearings under the SIR process began on December 27, a phase considered particularly sensitive and vulnerable to disruption.

Role of Central Forces

The CISF has now been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the Chief Electoral Officer. Officials believe the enhanced security will help ensure uninterrupted functioning of the electoral machinery during hearings and revisions under SIR, safeguarding the integrity of the voter list process.
