Dibrugarh: Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for Assam’s new legislative assembly complex in Dibrugarh on Friday and launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of compromising national interests for vote-bank politics and disrespecting Assamese culture.

Five Major Projects Inaugurated

During the event, Shah praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and highlighted the foundation laying of five major development projects worth ₹825 crore. He lauded Sarma’s vision of making Dibrugarh a second capital of Assam and noted the symbolic importance of the new legislative complex spread over 250 acres.

Attack on Congress and Rahul Gandhi

Shah accused the Congress of nurturing infiltrators for political gain. “Congress governments only made announcements; we fulfill them,” he said, vowing to identify and expel all illegal immigrants from Assam.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Shah said, “PM Modi proudly wore the Assamese gamusa at the United Nations, but Rahul Gandhi feels ashamed to wear it even in India.” His remarks referred to a recent controversy where Rahul Gandhi reportedly declined to wear the gamusa at a presidential event, which many in Assam considered an insult to their cultural identity.

Defending Assam’s Culture

Calling the gamusa a symbol of Assam’s pride, Shah asserted that the BJP will not tolerate disrespect towards the Northeast’s cultural heritage. He accused Rahul Gandhi of offering nothing to Assam except violence and instability, and contrasted that with the BJP’s peace agreements and youth reintegration programs.

Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

At the beginning of his speech, Shah paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, recalling Bapu’s role in uniting India and achieving independence.
