Patna: The Bihar Assembly on Monday witnessed an unusual yet vibrant discussion centered on granting Geographical Indication (GI) tags to the state’s famous traditional sweets. Instead of intense political debate, the session focused on preserving regional identity and promoting local culinary heritage.

Demand Raised for Khobhiya Lai

The discussion began with Dr. Siyaram Singh, MLA from Barh constituency, who highlighted the unique identity of “Khobhiya Lai,” a well-known sweet from his region. He stated that the sweet enjoys popularity across the state and deserves national recognition through a GI tag due to its distinct preparation and cultural significance.

Government’s Response on GI Process

Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav clarified that the matter falls under the Agriculture Department and that the concerned department would take further steps. Industries Minister Dilip Jaiswal added that the process for GI registration is underway and mentioned that Bihar has previously secured GI tags for several products.

Call to Include Barhahia Rasgulla and Other Sweets

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said that if Barh’s Lai is considered for GI recognition, then Barhahia’s Rasgulla should also be honored. He noted that Barhahia’s Rasgulla has a distinct identity and wide recognition. Following this, several MLAs mentioned sweets from their respective regions, including laddoo, raskadam, anarsa, tilkut, and dahi, urging the government to grant GI tags to these traditional products.

Proposal for Sweet Exhibition in Assembly

In a lighter moment, Deputy CM Sinha suggested organizing an exhibition of Bihar’s famous sweets within the Assembly premises so that legislators could experience the diversity firsthand. He proposed holding the exhibition during the ongoing session alongside the Basant festival. The Speaker responded positively and said efforts would be made to organize the event on the 25th.
