Samajwadi Party senior leader Azam Khan has been convicted by the MP-MLA court in Rampur in connection with a controversial speech delivered during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign. Magistrate Shobhit Bansal sentenced him to two years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.
What the Case Is About
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan was the SP candidate from Rampur. At a public rally held in the Bhot police station area during the campaign, he made objectionable remarks against the then District Magistrate. The video of the speech went viral on social media, following which cases were registered against him under multiple sections including violation of the Model Code of Conduct and hate speech.
Court Finds Him Guilty After Full Trial
The case was heard before the special MP-MLA court in Rampur. After hearing arguments from both sides and recording statements of witnesses, the court found Azam Khan guilty and pronounced the sentence.
Legal Troubles Continue to Mount
Azam Khan has previously been convicted in several other cases as well, and multiple other cases against him are still under trial. He is currently lodged in jail. The latest conviction from the MP-MLA court is likely to deepen both his legal and political difficulties going forward.
