New Delhi: The central government has extended the tenure of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for a third time, marking his fourth term in office. The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved his reappointment from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029.
Background
Mehta was first appointed Solicitor General in October 2018. His tenure has now been extended three times. He is one of the government’s most prominent law officers, arguing the Centre’s case in the Supreme Court and other constitutional courts on matters including Article 370, national security, election reforms, digital regulation, and Centre-State disputes.
Five ASGs Also Extended
Five Additional Solicitors General have also been given three-year extensions: SV Raju, N Vikramjit Banerjee, KM Nataraj, Venkataramani, and Aishwarya Bhati.
