Ranchi, Aug.26: A high-level probe team of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) will investigate the ‘accident’ at its 1000-MW Koderma Thermal Power Station (KTPS) which claimed the lives of four top officials of Shree Vijaya Company on Thursday.

An insider informed this saying that the probe team is expected to arrive at the spot in Banjhedih in Koderma at any moment today.

The accident took place as the cable of the elevator on which the officials were boarding in order to inspect a 90-m chimney broke while lowering down at the height of 80m. Apart from the death of four, as many as 19 workers working at the height of 50m also got trapped as they missed their means of coming down.

When asked about those trapped at the height, police superintendent of the district Kumar Gaurav said they were rescued by late at night.

“I got information around 11am that all those who had got trapped were rescued safely,” SP Gaurav said.

Asked SP Gaurav if yesterday’s incident was an accident or sabotage, he refused to comment saying that it was not possible for him to give any conclusive statement in the matter.

“Factory inspector will probe the matter. When formal information comes to us we will also probe at our level. At present it is difficult to comment on how the cable broke,” SP Gaurav said.

The chimney is under construction for flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) on the direction of the Supreme Court to check pollution from power plants.

Those who died included company operator from Maharashtra, Krishna Prasad Kodali, engineer from Karnataka, Kartik Sagar, safety officer from Gaya, Naveen Kumar, and managing director of the company Dr Vinod Kumar Choudhary.
