Dumka: Nineteen out of total of 32 flood gates of the Massanjore dam in Dumka have been opened by the irrigation department authorities of West Bengal following the inflow of rainwater in Mayurakshi river due to the incessant rain that has lashed the state for the last three days.
According to the sources of the dam management, those flood gates opened on Thursday comprise sixteen hightail flood gates, two low-level flood gates, and the one meant for the left irrigation canal through which nearly 15000 cusec water is being released from the Massanjore dam managed by the West Bengal government.
“The decision to open these gates were taken by our seniors considering the sudden influx of water during the rains caused by the cyclone Gulab with the water level being recorded above 386 ft nearing the danger mark of 398 ft,” said Shyama Prasad Roy, Assistant Engineer of the water resource department of West Bengal.
Earlier, altogether 21 flood gates of the Massanjore dam were opened in the first week of August this year due to the rise in the water level to the danger mark after 1978 and 1999.
The opening of as many flood gates coupled with the improvement in the rough weather condition caused by the cyclone, however, has been drawing tourists from Jharkhand and neighbouring state, Bengal, who are turning up in significant numbers to watch the spectacular view.
