New Delhi, Oct.4: The Congress asked on Monday that party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra be released immediately, alleging that she was detained illegally by the Uttar Pradesh Police. “The practise of restricting political leaders from free mobility is exceedingly hazardous,” Congress declared during a press conference. Congress has stated that they will organise rallies outside district magistrates’ offices in all districts of the country on Tuesday in response to the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Congress leader Rajiv Shukla said, “Tomorrow, there will be a gherao of DM’s office in every district across the country. It will become a countrywide movement. I demand the Prime Minister and UP chief minister take strict action against those responsible.”

The Congress also demanded immediate dismissal of Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Ajay Mishra, as well as the arrest of his son, who was identified in a FIR filed by Uttar Pradesh Police following the deaths of eight people, including four farmers, in Lakhimpur Kheri.

“We demand that Ajay Mishra be fired and that his son be detained. We also demand that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been unfairly jailed, be released immediately and allowed to visit the affected families. We also demand action against the officers who misbehaved with her,” added Rajiv Shukla.

The party went on to seek an investigation into how other people died in the violence, claiming that farmers should not be held accountable.

“Both Punjab’s Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel should be permitted to visit the afflicted families,” Shukla added. This came after the Uttar Pradesh government denied Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh permission to visit the violence-plagued district. Earlier in the day, the Chhattisgarh chief minister was denied permission to land his jet at the Lucknow airport.
