New Delhi, Oct 20: The Supreme Court reprimanded the UP government on Wednesday for the late filing of the report in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Chief Justice NV Ramana told advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the UP government, that the court had waited for the reply till 1a.m. last night. In the last hearing, the court had asked the UP government to file its reply before the next hearing on October 20.
The court also asked why the UP government did not take the statements of other witnesses in this case as out of 164 only 44 witnesses were examined till now. The court has asked the number of accused who are in the case in police custody and how many are in judicial custody.
Even during the last hearing of the Lakhimpur case, the Supreme Court had strongly reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government expressing its displeasure over the investigation. The court asked the UP government’s lawyer Harish Salve that why the accused was not arrested even after the murder case was registered? What message do you want to convey by doing this?
The court had adjourned the matter to October 26 by saying that this is a sensitive matter.
Notably, eight persons, including four farmers and a journalist were killed during a farmers’ protest on October 3 in Lakhimpur Kheri.
