Chancellor Portal blamed for 2685 vacant graduate seats in BBMKU Dhanbad

Dhanbad Oct 20: Various students unions are on the boil over 2685 vacant graduation seats in the constituent colleges of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Dhanbad.

The unions have alleged that while thousands of students have been roaming for admission, university authorities have declared 2685 graduation seats as vacant after the third and last chance of submitting an application.

The BBMKU had sought applications for admission in 6854 vacant seats in 10 constituent colleges of Dhanbad and Bokaro till October 15 for the third time. But only 4,169 students applied against it and 2685 seats remained vacant.

University officials said that seats are vacant in almost all the subjects including political science and economics, which, in the past, used to get filled up in the first list itself.

Former BBMKU Dean of Social Science Prof. SKL Das held the ‘Chancellor Portal’ responsible for the vacant seats in the university.

“The university seeks application for admission through the Chancellor Portal which is not accessible to most of the students of rural areas and poor students. Online applications are a problem for the students living in remote areas like Nirsa (55 km away), Tundi block (around 45 km away), Topchanchi (55 km away) and Baghmara (45 km away).  Moreover, the charges (Rs 200 to Rs 300 for applying) also deprive poor students of applying. This is why the majority of students from remote areas miss the chance to apply for admissions,” pointed out Prof Das, who was also the Principal of SSLNT Women’s College and Jharia RSP College.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) District Coordinator Anshu Tiwari held the admission department and its concerned officers of BBMKU responsible for these vacant seats.

“There are massive loopholes in the admission process. We have been making rounds of the university for admission of thousands of students but admission in-charge (Prof. Namita Gupta) is not available. We would be compelled to agitate if the university does not correct the process soon,” said Anshu Tiwari.

The Jharkhand Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Morcha (JCYSM) has warned the university authority to either take admission on vacant seats or face the stir.

“In the name of Chancellor Portal, poor students of remote areas are being exploited and deprived of admission. We would continue to protest against the university,” said Rishikant Yadav, President of JCYSM.

BBMKU admission in-charge Namita Gupta could not be contacted for comment on the allegation of students.
