Ranchi, Jan 21: Unlike youths of the state, dogs are not available to serve the Jharkhand police.

This was reflected when the Crime Investigation department had to go for the re-tendering process after no one responded to its call given a month ago to supply 22 dogs for the Dog Squad of the state, having sanctioned a strength of 58 for the first time.

The tender that appeared in the newspaper suggested that out of 22 dogs, as many as 9 Belgian Shephard (Malinois) and 13 Labrador retrievers are immediately required for CID to solve the murder mystery and to ensure security to VIPs and VVIPs.

At present, CID has only 16 dogs against its sanctioned strength of 58. It has weakened the preparedness for the security of the state police facing threats only from extremists but gangsters and burglars also across the state.

Out of 16 dogs available, 4 are trackers while 12 are explosive sniffers. The total vacant post for canines is 42, including 18 trackers and 24 explosive sniffers.

On the shortage of canines in the dog squad, ADG (CID) Prashant Kumar said that there has been a shortage of the dogs from the past three to four years as the Army Veterinary Corps was unable to meet the requirements of the dogs.

On the re-initiation of tender for the purchase of dogs, Veterinary Officer Arvind Kumar Singh said that no bids have been received from the dog breeders because of which a re-tender has been floated for the purchase of dogs.

“We have thought of purchasing the dogs and training them with the CISF for which tie-ups have been made,” he said.

On the cancellation of the tenders, an insider said that due to several rules and regulations associated with the tender, no bids have been attracted and for which re-tender has been issued.
