Mumbai, Mar 5: A long-range version of the BrahMos cruise missile was successfully test-fired by the Indian Navy today.

The Navy said in a tweet that the test-firing proved the BrahMos missile’s long-range precision strike capability.

“Long range precision strike capability of advanced version of BrahMos missile successfully validated. Pin point destruction of target demonstrated combat and mission readiness of frontline platforms. Yet another shot in the arm for Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” the Navy tweeted.

The Indian Navy on the achievement said that both Brahmos missile and INS Chennai are indigenously built and highlight the cutting-edge of Indian missile and ship-building prowess. They reinforce the Indian Navy’s contribution towards the Atma Nirbhar Bharat and Make in India endeavours.

“This achievement establishes the Indian Navy’s ability to strike even deeper and influence land operations further away from sea, when and where required.”

The Navy tests the BrahMos, one of the world’s most destructive cruise missiles, on a regular basis.

In November 2017, a Sukhoi-30MKI successfully test-fired the air-launched variant of the BrahMos.

This cruise missile is supersonic, meaning it travels faster than sound. Because of its fast speed, it is difficult to intercept by surface-to-air missiles installed on major warships across the world.

The BrahMos has been in service with the Navy and Army since 2006, but the air-launched variant is more adaptable since, unlike slow-moving warships, a fast-moving Sukhoi-30 fighter can fly at least 1,500 kilometres towards a target before firing the missile. The missile then travels another 400 kilometres to reach its objective.
