New Delhi, April 13: After a six-year gap, a conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts will convene on April 30 to discuss speedy delivery of justice, reduced litigation pending, and mounting judicial vacancies. The conference, which was last conducted on April 24, 2016, is a forum for discussing difficulties facing the judiciary.

The Prime Minister normally opens such gatherings in the presence of the Chief Justice of India and the Union Law Minister. The prime minister is expected to open the day-long meeting once again.

Though the conference’s programme has yet to be finalised, government sources say that topics such as swift justice, vacancies in subordinate courts and the 25 high courts, judicial infrastructure, and reduced pendency are expected to be discussed.

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana proposed to the government a few months ago to establish a National Judicial Infrastructure Authority of India (NJIAI) to provide adequate court infrastructure.

The planned organisation will serve as a clearinghouse for laying out the road map for the Indian court system’s functional infrastructure planning, creation, development, maintenance, and management.

Normally, such conferences take place every two years, but exceptions have been made. While the most recent conference took place in April 2016, the one before that took place in 2015. The previous conference was held in 2013.
