Hyderabad, April 15: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Friday said that strengthening the subordinate judiciary is urgently needed, and that the most pressing issue confronting the Indian court is the issue of pendency.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Conference of Telangana State Judicial Officers, he said that the goal of organising the Conference is to reflect on numerous aspects governing the administration of justice and to find ways and means to improve the system’s quality.

“Strengthening the subordinate Judiciary is the need of the hour. The performance of any organization delivering any form of service must be assessed in terms of its effectiveness in achieving its goals. The goal of the justice delivery system is to deliver timely justice, as contemplated in the Constitution,” he said.

“Talking about the effectiveness of achieving the goal of justice delivery, the most crucial issue affecting the Indian judiciary, and particularly the subordinate judiciary, is the issue of pendency,” he added.

CJI Ramana stated that it has been his goal to fill all judicial vacancies at all levels, and that with the help of all stakeholders, significant progress may be done. The CJI also announced that a conference of Chief Justices and Chief Ministers will be held in Delhi in the last week of April to discuss a variety of topics, including judicial infrastructure and appointments.

While asking judges to look after their physical and emotional health, the CJI vowed that the judicial administration will look into concerns concerning judges’ safety and financial well-being.
