Ranchi, April 23: In a witch-hunt case, an elderly couple was beheaded at Bumka Bhagat Toli under Chainpur police station in Gumla district , about 70km from here.

The deceased were identified as Mudra Chik Baraik (65) and his wife Fulmani Devi (60).

Superintendent of police (SP) of the district Ehtesham Waquarib confirmed the incident saying the murder was committed on Friday late night.

The SP said accused Ravindra Baraik and his wife  Sumitra Devi surrendered before the police. They are close relatives of the deceased. They used an axe to commit the crime. The police have also recovered the same.

Asked what made Ravindra and Sumitra think the couple was witches, SP Waquarib said: “Daughter of the accused was ill for a long time and this made the accused suspicious.”

Probed further, the SP said: ” Investigation is on.”
