No relief to Navjot Sidhu in road rage case as CJI refuses plea

New Delhi, May 20: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Friday rejected Congress politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s request for more time before surrendering in connection with a 1988 road rage case in which the top court sentenced him to a year in prison on Thursday.

The Congress politician, who is represented by prominent counsel and Congressman Abhishek Manu Singhvi, has stated that he requires some time to organise his medical difficulties. As Singhvi requested a hearing on Sidhu’s motion, the court instructed him to file a formal appeal with Chief Justice NV Ramana, who will convene a special bench to hear the case today. The CJI refused to hear Singhvi’s request for an urgent session of the court because the subject had already been raised.

The Supreme Court had already granted a review of its May 2018 decision exonerating former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu in the 34-year-old road rage case in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh died.

According to the order, Punjab police will take Sidhu into jail. Sidhu had previously been given a Rs 1,000 fine. Sidhu has now been sentenced to the maximum penalty under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code.

On May 15, 2018, the Supreme Court overturned a Punjab and Haryana High Court decision convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and imposing a three-year sentence in the case, but found him guilty of injuring an elderly citizen.
